“I don’t really eat a lot of sugar.”

If I had a dollar for every time someone said that to me I would be on a beach in Costa Rica right now.

Sugar is everywhere.

It’s in the places you automatically think of: candy, chocolate, cakes, cookies, etc.

But it’s also in pasta sauce, salad dressing, marinades, crackers, bread, and even table salt.

Yes, you read that right, they add sugar to table salt.

So even if you think you don’t have a sweet tooth, you may be eating far more sugar on a daily basis than you really know.

Here are 5 signs you’re eating too much sugar that you might never had thought of:

1. Frequent Colds & Flu

Sugar supresses your immune system by impairing your white blood cells from doing their job of seeking out dangerous bacteria and destroying them.  As little as 3.5 ounces of sugar can supress your immune system by as much as 50%!

2. Dark Circles Under Your Eyes

The blood sugar rollercoaster that is initiated when we eat too much sugar takes a big toll on our adrenal glands.  These are the glands that regular our “fight or flight” response to stress and a high sugar diet is a source of nutritional stress on the body.  A common sign that your adrenal glands are exhausted is dark circles under the eyes.

3. Yeast Infections

In your gut you have what people like to refer to as, “good” and “bad” bacteria.  Normally they balance one another out and live in harmony.  However, the “bad” bacteria love to eat sugar, so when we have a great deal of sugar in our diet it tends to result in an overgrowth of the “bad” guys like yeast.  Yeast infections in women are a common symptom that the gut bacteria balance is out of whack as a result of too much sugar.

4. Food Sensitivities

Another problem that can arise from the imbalanced gut bacteria described above is a condition known as “leaky gut syndrome.” This is where an overgrowth of bad bacteria and inflammation actually cause small tears in the lining of the small and large intestine.  This allows tiny food particles that are supposed to stay inside the digestive system to escape into the blood stream.  This causes the immune system to go into high alert to deal with these foreign substances.  Allergies, asthma and food sensitivities are common symptoms of leaky gut syndrome.

5. Lack of Energy

Because too much sugar in the blood is an extremely dangerous condition, when we eat a lot of sugar the body needs to quickly produce a lot of insulin to neutralize the sugar. A huge influx of insulin causes the blood sugar to dip very low which is what produces the “crash” a little while after you consume sugar.  We then tend to reach for something sweet to bring us back up again.  This up and down rollercoaster is very hard on the body and requires an enormous amount of energy.  It’s a common reason that many people complain of low energy throughout the day.

When it comes to your diet, sugar is the number one worst food you can eat.  It negatively affects every organ and system in the body.  And even if you’re not eating chocolate bars and candy, you still may be eating too much.
