I love food.
I love to cook food, eat food, and I have spent the past two and a half years studying about how food affects every single aspect of our bodies and minds. And perhaps it’s because I feel so strongly about food that, after a while, certain food trends really start to get under my skin.
Here are just a few:
1. Gourmet Cupcakes – I love a cupcake. Chocolate, vanilla, I even had an amazing Cookies and Cream one on a recent special occasion. But why the instance on messing with a classic? Do we really need a grilled cheese cupcake, or a beer cupcake, or a smoked salmon cupcake? If it ain’t broke…
2. Foods that include the word “artisan” – If you put the word “Artisan” before any food, you are a douchebag.
3. Bacon Everything – You like bacon. We get it. You can just like bacon. You don’t need to put it on donuts or cereal and post it on Facebook.
4. Ridiculous Teas – Between David’s Tea and Teavana and a million online tea importers, it seems like everywhere you look we’re surrounded by tea. But, this is my problem – tea is a real thing. It’s made by steeping the cured leaves of the tea plant camellia sinensis (thanks Wikipedia) in warm or boiling water. And, of course, there are also lovely herbal teas out there. I can firmly get behind a sassy peppermint or a relaxing chamomile. But just because you pour hot water over something, that doesn’t make it tea. Trail mix with hot water poured over it is not tea.
5. Aioli – It’s just mayonnaise folks. Putting chipotle or tarragon in it is never going to change that.
6. Excessive Quinoa – Now, don’t get me wrong, I love quinoa. It’s full of protein, iron and fiber and it’s actually a seed – not a grain – which makes it a little easier to digest for a lot of people. I recomend it all the time as part of a healthy diet. But I believe that the current quinoa craze is a classic case of, too much of a good thing. Quinoa crackers, quinoa pasta, quinoa flakes, puffed quinoa, quinoa cookies, . Stop!! You’re ruining it!
What have I left out? What food trends annoy you the most?
Hi Sara, I would love to chat with you as it seems we are on a mission to understand the same thing, how food effects our bodies and minds. I have started a food company and also a blog. I am not a strong writer but I am eager to learn and network with like minded people. Here is my blog http://www.foodfairyblog.com
I hope to hear from you.
