It absolutely breaks my heart when I look around the train during my morning commute and see three quarters of my fellow passengers either nodding off because they were only barely able to drag their asses out of bed, or staring out the window in a trance of apathy bordering on depression.

I want to leap out of my seat, grab them by the shoulders and shake them – hard.

Life is short. Do not waste the time you get feeling like the walking dead.

In my experience, there are three primary reasons that so many people are spending half their lives in a zombie-like state:

Blood Sugar

A diet of sugar, simple carbs and caffeine sends your blood sugar on a rollercoaster ride from the moment your alarm clock goes off, until the moment you collapse back into bed. It’s hard on your pancreas, your adrenal glands and your brain. It leaves you feeling drained, grumpy, sad and reaching for more sugar and caffeine to compensate.

Cut the white stuff and replace it with vegetables.

Microbiome

Inside your small and large intestines live trillions of bacteria. The balance of this delicate ecosystem directly affects how you digest your food, how you fight off infection, and how motivated you are to eat right and exercise. The brain-gut connection is exploding right now as an area of cutting edge research and we’re learning that the foods you crave, the drive you have and the moods you feel may be more a result of what’s going on in your gut than your brain.

Learn more about the bacteria that live in your gut and what you can do to bring them into balance and keep them living in harmony.

Stress

Rushing, bustling, multi-tasking and hacking our way through our days takes a huge toll on both our physical and mental health. Everything’s a blur and we spend far too much time thinking about what we’re doing and not nearly enough time thinking about why we’re doing it.

Slow down, breathe and appreciate the world around you.

Guess what, you don’t have to be one of those people who can’t keep their eyes open, who’s just trying to get through the day, who knows they have more inside but is so trapped in a fog that they let the days slip by and never do anything about it. You can choose to be different.

You only get to do your life once.

Grab hold of the steering wheel and live it wide awake, fully engaged and utterly present.

Live it full-assed.
