I’m off sugar.

Cold turkey.

It’s horrible.

People often seem surprised when I say I’m doing a detox or cleanse of any kind because they assume that my diet is perfect because of what I do.  Well it’s not.

I have a crazy mad sweet tooth!  No, sweet tooth is too cute a term.  I’m like a hard core sugar junkie.

I could (and have) had a kale smoothie for breakfast, lentil salad for lunch, raw nuts and veggies for snacks, and organic wild salmon with steamed asparagus for dinner drizzled in flax oil…and then followed it all up with two chocolate cupcakes.

Sure, they might be gluten-free chocolate cupcakes with raw cacao, but they’re still cupcakes and they’re still packed with sugar.

I find that if I don’t watch myself, sugar starts to creep into almost every one of my meals.

Extra dates in my smoothie, maple syrup in the muffin with my tea, honey in the dressing on my salad, dried cranberries in my trail mix, and on and on.  It all sounds like healthy stuff, but those little bits of “natural” sugars add up over the course of my day until I might as well be scarfing down a Mars bar – which I also do from time to time.

Recently the sugar monster has been creeping back in so this weekend I decided that I needed to put my foot down.

No sugar.

Cold turkey.

So what am I eating instead?

This is the menu for today:

Breakfast – Green Tea and Green Smoothie

Lunch – Green Salad with homemade Greek dressing and leftover gluten and dairy-free quiche from dinner last night.

SnacksQuinoa Tabbouleh and raw nuts and seeds (almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds)

Dinner – Baked salmon with lemon and cilantro and sauteed cabbage and carrots.

I’m also drinking lots and lots and lots of water and taking a Chromium supplement which is super helpful with stabilizing blood sugar levels.

So, that’s the plan for today.   So far I feel fine but that won’t last.  I’ve been down this road before and I know that by tomorrow night I’ll be curled in bed with a brutal headache and a long list of things to apologize to my family for.

Wish me luck!
